Seahawks vs. Bears - Divisional Playoffs Preview

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

I’m not sure if this is a dream come true, or a nightmare. I imagine that the outcome of Sunday’s game will go far in determining that. My hometown team, the Chicago Bears, face the Seahawks who happen to represent the city that I currently live in. Make no mistake, I have a clear rooting interest. You know when people say “I don’t care who wins, I like both teams”? Yeah, this is NOT one of those times. If the Bears don’t win, I’ll be disappointed. And if the Seahawks win, I’ll have to eat crow in the city I call home.

I think I’ll be safe though. The Bears quarterback situation notwithstanding. The Seahawks come in this game pretty beaten up. I read an article in the Seattle Times about how lucky the Seahawks are.

But being lucky matters as much as being good in the NFL postseason and, while the Bears clearly remain the best team left in the NFC, Seattle arrives as the luckiest.

How stupid. If the Seahawks win, it won’t be because they were lucky. It will most likely because Rex Grossman didn’t focus on his preparation (again). The Bears dominated the Seahawks earlier this year 37-6. Granted, the Seahawks were without Shaun Alexander and Jerramy Stevens. But Alexander hasn’t looked like the dominant runner he has in years past. He looks tenative and still recovering.

The Bears will have a healthy secondary to go up against the Seahawks battered wide receivers. I like the Bears chances there. And the Bears offense should (I hope) rely on a solid running game, that will hopefully open up the defense so the Bears can take advantage of their secondary. I like the Bears at home. The point spread is a little much for my taste. I don’t think the Bears will pound them by 9 points. Not this time around. But I like the Bears chances to win their first playoff game since 1995 and go to the NFC Championship game.

Florida vs. Ohio State - BCS National Championship Game Recap

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Well, I have to admit, that the BCS National Championship game did not turn out the way that I anticipated. Coming in I thought the Gators were over-matched. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Florida’s defense made Ohio State’s offense look silly. Of course the loss of Ted Ginn Jr. was huge for Ohio State, but you can’t blame this loss on that. Troy Smith was pressured all game, and that pressure led him to turn the ball over. Florida scored 14 points off of turnovers in the first half. Take that away, and the Buckeyes are within 6 at the half. That’s a margin that can be made up. Twenty points on the other hand is a lot harder to overcome, especially when the Gators’ defense had man-handled the Buckeye’s offense (especially the offensive line).

Chris Leak stole the show, proving all of his doubters wrong. Tim Tebow definitely contributed to the win, adding 39 yards and a touchdown on the ground and one touchdown through the air. The senior quarterback, Leak, was the toast of Glendale, Arizona Monday night. He was a four year starter at Florida. He was recruited by Steve Spurrier, played for Ron Zook, and finally won a National Championship with Urban Meyer at the helm.

Even more than their offense, it was the Gator defense that won it for Florida. They held Heisman trophy winner Troy Smith to four completions over 14 attempts for 5 yards and one interception. Smith was sacked 5 times. His offensive line wasn’t able to block Florida’s defensive ends. The Gators were fast, and they were tough. They swarmed to the ball, and when they got there, they delivered hits. Urban Meyer played the disrespect card as he prepared his team for the National Championship game, and it worked.

I hate to say it, but the Big Ten’s top teams got waxed this bowl season. First Michigan was embarrassed by PAC 10 champion USC, and Monday the Big Ten champions Ohio State were overwhelmed by the SEC champion Florida Gators. Congratulations to the BCS National Champion Florida Gators.

Rex Grossman is having a hard time focusing

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Rex Grossman

What in the world is going on? Rex Grossman is supposedly a leader on the Bears team. But then he drops this nugget on us:

In this league at this position, you have to bring it every single week no matter what (and) in the situation (against the Packers) it felt like I was going to play about a half, it’s the last game, New Year’s Eve, and there were so many factors that brought my focus away from what is actually important

How can he say that? How do you lose focus as a starting NFL quarterback? When you are getting paid millions of dollars a year to take a week off? And perhaps something that’s even more frightening. How does your coach let you lose focus. I know that Rex Grossman is a grown man, and other people cannot be held responsible for his actions. The coaches have to had known that he was coasting. He should have been benched, and Brian Griese (who was equally as bad) should have gotten the start. At least you can chalk up Griese’s poor performance to being rusty.

What next for Grossman and the Bears? Hopefully Rex has learned his lesson. If you don’t retain focus and prepare for every part of every game, you will be embarrassed on national television. My confidence level is very low at this point. Here’s hoping Grossman can learn something (his University of Florida “education” notwithstanding).

Packers vs. Bears Recap

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

In a game that was supposed to be meaningless, I think we all saw some very meaningful things Sunday night when the Packers waxed the Bears in Chicago (26-7).

First of all, we learned that Rex Grossman and Brian Griese both has serious flaws as starting quarterbacks. The tandem combined for 5 interceptions and one lost fumble. They amassed 157 passing yards and one touchdown between them. Yes, I know the Packers defense is improved. But those performances just suck it.

For me, in my mind, Rex Grossman should lose his job for his piss-poor reaction to his first interception that was returned for a touchdown. After Grossman threw the ball, saw it was intercepted, and saw that he was the only player between Nick Collins (who intercepted the errant pass) and the end zone, he decided to weakly jog toward him. Making absolutely no attempt to catch and certainly no attempt to tackle him. Umm, Rex? Yeah, YOU just threw that weak ass interception. It’s your fault that the other team is about to score 6 points. And the least you could do is to give a little effort, and try and tackle him. It would at least give your team the appearance that you cared. That’s all.

One bright spot for the Bears offense was Cedric Benson (13 carries for 109 yards). He averaged 8.4 yards a carry. Benson has been getting more carries as of late and Sunday night he certainly took advantage of that. The passing game was pretty much terrible the whole game, except for the beautiful pass from Griese to second year man Mark Bradley. Griese hit him in stride as Bradley took it in for the score. It was good to see Bradley getting back into the flow of the game after missing most of his rookie season with an injury.

The Bears defense was embarassing. Brett Favre carved up the defense. Ahman Green looked like he was 23 again. And Ruvell Martin racked up 118 yards against the Bears secondary. Granted the defense didn’t have much to play for, especially after the offense gave the game away early. But Ron Rivera, who was considered the hottest head coaching prospect earlier this year, had better get his squad focused. They have looked terrible the last 5 games. very average, and very beatable.

As it stands now, with football lament at an all time high, I don’t see the Bears winning their first playoff game in 2 weeks. Of course we’ll have to stay tuned for their opponent, but I’m not sure they could beat anyone in the playoffs with the effort they put forth on Sunday night.

Michigan vs. USC - Rose Bowl Recap

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Outplayed and outcoached. I want to leave it at that, but it would probably be better for me if I was able to let it out. So I will try. The Rose Bowl (presented by Citi, of course) left me with a lot of questions.

  1. Why does Michigan shit the bed in bowl games?
  2. Are Pete Carroll and his staff that much better than Lloyd Carr and his?
  3. Why is every broadcasting team on the air to call a Michigan game decidedly anti-Michigan?
  4. Why didn’t Michigan utilize the no-huddle offense sooner to tire out the USC defense. It actually worked at the end of the game
  5. Can anyone on the Michigan defense consistently wrap an opposing player up?
  6. Does anyone like Pete Carroll’s smug smile and schtick? I know right now, he’s atop the short list of most annoying head coaches (Jim Tressel will forever be ahead of all others on that list)?
  7. Can a guy catch a break? First the Cubs, now the Bears, and to top it off, the beloved Michigan Wolverines. UGGGGH.
  8. Do USC, Pete Carroll, or any of his players have any class?
    • Dwayne Jarrett handing the ball to Willis Barringer after torching him
    • LB Brian Cushing making the “nanny nanny boo boo” sign with his hands after a sack and Pete Carroll laughing about it
  9. Should Lloyd Carr and his staff keep their jobs?

Readers, I ask you these questions. Does anyone out there have a salve for my unending sports pain?
