For Barry Bonds, It was Just a Matter of Time
Tuesday, March 7th, 2006Of course the sports world is buzzing about the Sports Illustrated story that documents Bonds’ steriod use. I read the excerpt that is available on the SI web site, and it’s really quite compelling. I’m not suprised that there is an abundance of evidence against Bonds and other “juicers”. What I am suprised about is the brazen attitudes of those involved that they were not going to be caught. Greg Anderson in particular is quoted in the piece,
The whole thing is, everything I’ve been doing, it’s all undetectable
Granted, at the time it was. How can someone be so naive to think that something like this wasn’t going to get out? Due to the medical (and I use that term loosely) nature of Bonds’ steriod use, Anderson, and Victor Conte (Chairman of BALCO, Bonds’ supplier) kept extensive documentation as to what and when Bonds’ was using. This next statement may go down as the understatement of the year. I know Barry Bonds’ isn’t the smartest guy in the world, but could he really be so stupid as to think that this incriminating evidence wouldn’t come out?
The story paints the picture well of Bonds having been passed over by the likes of McGwire, and Sosa in 1998. And how that inspired Bonds to become the greatest hitter of all time (although doing it by using steriods and human growth hormones). Apparently there isn’t anything that this guy won’t stick in his body to try and get and edge.
There is also a photo slideshow that shows Bonds over his career. If nothing else, this demonstrates a man whose head, face and body have drastically changed over the last 15 years. That, in and of itself, is scary.
Like I said. I’m not suprised by all the details of this book. I hope this sheds some light on Bonds’ character, so that everyone, young and old can see exactly what not to do to get ahead.
It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
